Synchronous & Asynchronous are invaluable tools for online teaching as well as learning. The trick is learning how to use both tools effectively. Asynchronous assignments allow the student to work at their own pace. They have the time to research, comply and reflect on their assignments. The student has the opportunity to work from their comfort zone which turn allows for more relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately this can also lead to isolation and loss of motivation. A great way to balance out the monotony of asynchronous study is to add synchronous assignments. With this tool, the student is participating in real time with their fellow students and instructor. There is a sense of belonging and a creative interaction among the students. It also allows the students that are versed in technology to use their skills in navigating their learning process.
